The first day of camp is one of introductions and foundations for the new & returning cadets. They start off the day meeting their Squad-mates (8 cadets to a squad/group); get gear issued, and go through a safety briefing. Next they head off for SCBA drills and Firefighter Drags where they drag a fellow Squad-mates over a distance with full packs.
In the afternoon; they took part in a Fire Dynamics class learning how fire and smoke move through a burning building via simulation house; practice with fire extinguishers; and then earned their CPR for BLS Providers certification from the American Heart Association.
The day ended on a sweet note; Kona Ice of Monroeville brought by their truck and the cadets were treated to a cool desert.
The Holiday Park Volunteer Fire Department each summer hosts a Fire Camp & Junior Fire Academy for youth 14 – 17 years of age who are interested in the Emergency Services fields whether as a career path or as volunteers. A cadre of instructors and staff from the areas of Fire, Emergency Medical Services, and Law Enforcement provide the campers, or as we like to call them, cadets, a glimpse into their worlds and sample what it’s like to be in them.
