Tonight, we hosted adults and children for the second class in our National Preparedness Month educational series, Home Fire Safety. Participants had classroom time, simulation time in our fire safety trailer and took home some fire safety tools.
Chief Jim Sims led a discussion on hazards in the home that can prevented, along with warning signs for Carbon Monoxide posioning. The interactive chat brought several questions and scenarios from the particpants. Videos were shown how fast fires can develop in newer made homes as well as how fast materials used today in furniture can burn in half the time of just two decades ago.
Lt Dan Giannettino, Senior Engineer Nic Albert, and Firefighter/EMT Aly Bryner then took the class into our new Fire Safety Trailer and walked them through scenarios such as burnt sockets, hot doors, evacuating in smoke filled rooms, along with a review of what to expect from when the fire department gets there. The trailer was recently purchased as a joint effort between the four volunteer fire departments in Plum.
The Renton Volunteer Fire Deparment, as part of their 2020 FEMA Grant, donated two dual Smoke/CO Detectors to each household present in class. The Volunteer Firefighter Alliance donated safety/coloring books and badges for the children. In addition everyone went home with additional fire safety kits and planning guides.
